Warren Schmidt wird als Versicherungsvertreter in Pension geschickt. Als auch noch seine Frau Helen stirbt, droht er völlig zu verwahrlosen, denn mit dem Rentnerdasein kommt Schmidt überhaupt nicht zurecht. Er macht sich darauf in einem Wohnmobil auf eine Reise zu Orten aus seiner Vergangenheit, um sich selbst wieder finden zu können. Die Konfrontation mit den Stationen seiner Jugend entfaltet aber nicht die Bedeutung, die sich Schmidt gewünscht hat. Er fährt darauf zur Hochzeit seiner Tochter, ohne die Balance wiedergefunden zu haben. Das bleibt nicht ohne Folgen.
