Als General Moïse Tschombé durch einen Staatsstreich an die Macht im Kongo kommt, beginnt er, internationale Söldnertruppen um sich zu scharen, die wiederum von Bergbauunternehmen angeheuert wurden. Im September 1961 werden schließlich 150 irische UN-Blauhelme unter der Führung von Kommandant Patrick Quinlan (Jamie Dornan) nach Jadotville entsendet. Für Irland ist es die erste UN-Friedensmission in der Geschichte. Doch schon bald werden die Blauhelme von circa 3.000 bis 5.000 militanten Anhängern Tschombés angegriffen. Durch die zahlenmäßige Unterlegenheit scheint die Situation für die Iren ausweglos. Doch Quinlan führt seine Männer entschlossen an und gemeinsam leisten sie erbitterten Widerstand
